Vera 112/365: Hat
For starters, this isn’t the photo I had planned all day. The one I hoped to get didn’t turn out. This was my safe shot.
These are my three children all wearing “Vera Hats”. Vera is an aunt of mine who is truly unique. She is the salt of the earth. We love her dearly. She has a very spunky personality and likes bright colors. She always has.
A few years ago she went in for a doctor appointment and they found a lump in her breast. As the results came back, it was diagnosed as cancer. This was the closest I’ve come in my adult life to witnessing the extremely challenging trial that cancer is. It is truly overwhelming.
As is the typical case, she was operated on and then went through her treatments. She soon began to loose her hair. As that happened she started making wonderfully colored stocking caps for herself to wear. Before long, most of her family had them as well. It became a way for us to show our support for her.
To this day, I wear mine with pride and honor. She struggled tremendously, but never lost who she was, she just had to share it differently. We love you Vera.
