Goodbyes are not forever.
Goodbyes are not the end.
They simply mean I'll miss you
Until we meet again!

Zion Sunset

without comments

This shot was taken the first day we were at Zion National Park.  This was taken at the Canyon Overlook.  It is an absolutely breathtaking view of the canyon.  We arrived shortly before sunset and were treated to absolutely stunning skies.

I took this with two cokin filters and I feel it brought out the feeling and mood of the vista.

An End Of Sorts – 73/365: Sunsets

without comments

This was a pretty fun photo to shoot, the whole family came along and we enjoyed a nice sunset as I clicked away.  Afterwards, we all came home and voted on which shot was going to be published.

11/365 Landscape and Some Lessons Learned

without comments

Today’s challenge is to shoot landscapes.  Weather wise it has been an odd day, it is the middle of winter here and it rained.  I can’t remember many times this has happened.  It did however, provide very dark clouds which was an interesting contrast to the white snow.  This is the photo I chose for my entry:

I initially went out with the goal in mind to shoot some landscape in color using my cokin filters.  I had limited time, so I hustled out with Brinci and started shooting.  After each shot I glanced at the result but didn’t pay much attention to them.  When I got back I noticed that I had my Tobacco filter set too strong for these images.  As a result, they looked a bit off color wise.  My only option was to convert to black and white.  Lesson, keep any eye on the colors and realize that they are more saturated then the viewfinder portrays.  Here are the other shots:

Solitary Tree Part 2

with 4 comments

This morning I had an opportunity to play with my Cokin filters again.  I woke up to an overcast sky with the sun peaking through the clouds sporadically.  I grabbed my graduated ND filter and my Tobacco filter and hustled out the door.  My subject this morning was a subject I’ve captured before in B&W, an individual tree at my wife’s sister’s house in Blackfoot, Idaho.

Cokin Filters

with 3 comments

For Christmas, my mother got me a five Cokin filters I have been eyeing for sometime.  I’ve never shot with filters before, and these first few shots show I’ve got a bunch of work to do before I figure them out, but I’m pleased with the results of my first time out with them.

I’ve added a link to my cokin photoset on the right side of this blog.  I’ll add every Cokin shot I take to that photoset.

Interesting note, most people use filters to enhance their color photos.  I’m actually more excited about using these for black and white as I’ll be able to control my light better.  I will however, still shoot color with them.
