10/365 – Motion

without comments

Today’s subject was “Motion”.  After doing this for Brinci once, guess what we spent the next 30 minutes doing for her again and for the other kids as well?  We really needed Dave to come over and help out!

5/365 Windows

without comments

I really struggled with this photo.  It isn’t what I wanted to capture, I was just unable to get what I wanted.  I suppose that happens in the course of 365 days.

The things we miss

without comments

We drive on I-84 from Echo to Ogden every time we visit my in-laws in Blackfoot, ID or my sisters in Logan, UT.  Along the way we pass a little place near Morgan, UT call Taggart.  From the exit for Taggart you can barely see the tops of the handful of houses that reside there.  One building in Taggart is Taggart Grill.  We recently stopped there and ate having passed it many times before.  While expensive, the food was really good and we enjoyed our time there.  It is amazing the things that are right in front of you that you miss year after year.

Pumpkin Carving

without comments

Last night we carved pumpkins.  It is so fun to watch my children explore new things and to see the excitment on their faces.  Last night was especially rewarding.

I shot these photos with my Nifty Fifty (50mm f/1.8) in rather low light.  The lens did amazingly well.  I then processed the photos in Lightroom 2 using some presets I found on http://x-equals.com/blog/.  They have some great presets over there, I recommend checking them out.  That being said, the last two photos I wish I would have reviewed a bit more as the preset I used on them added some odd artifacting that I’m not too fond of and should have addressed.

More photos from this and our Halloween adventures may be found on our Halloween 2008 set.

The Real Story

without comments

Saturday evening I talked my daughter into letting me take a few pictures of her.  While I was scouting out a good background and workable light I noticed she was occupying herself with some little leaf project.  I have no idea what she was up to or trying to accomplish, but I decided to take a few pictures of her gathering and transporting the leaves.  She seemed almost frantic to get it done.  It was fun to observe and the results were the best shots I made that evening.

Brinci and Toby watch the sunset

without comments

Tonight we watched a cold sunset.  I posed Brinci and Toby by it and took a quick shot.  My subjects (Toby in particular) weren’t too interested in posing, so I had to be quick.  I appreciate that they humored me as much as they did.  Tomorrow starts my black and white weekend.

Catching snow

without comments

As I’ve gone through my photographs of this weekend, I found my favorite which is of Brinci catching snow on her tongue.  What I really like about this photo is how seriously she is trying to catch snow flakes and that if you look closely, she has caught one on her tongue that hasn’t yet melted.   Click on the image to pull it up in flickr where there is a note showing her catching one.  From flickr, you can click on the “ALL SIZES” button above the image for larger image with more detail.

What’s black and white and red all over…

Toby in the snow!

So I’m currently in my 50mm weekend and I’m loving it.  It is taking a bit of getting used to as this is the first time I’ve shot with a fixed focal length for any period of time.  I wish I could go out and about a bit more with this lens this weekend, but it is really snowing hard which means time for portraits.

I’ve been evaluating Lightroom 2.0 (I’m definitely going to buy it) and I decided to do partial saturation today.  Here are the results:
